Celebrating feathered friends at Hengist Field Care Home

On Monday 22 January we made some bird feeders here at Hengist Field Care Home, in preparation for The RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch – the largest garden wildlife survey in the UK which has been running every year since 1979.

We used empty toilet rolls and covered them in peanut butter or nutella. Then we rolled them in birdseed and tied string to them for hanging up. We also used the empty halves of oranges and filled them up with birdseed, ready for the garden.

All the bird feeders were then hung in our orangery garden, ready for The RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch on Friday 26 January, when we sat along our corridors watching for birds in our garden and ticking off the types we saw on our RSPB bird sheet.

To keep us going we served lovely hot chocolates, with a topping of everyone’s choice – squirty cream, flavoured sauces, sprinkles and marshmallows, which always goes down a treat.

The main birds we spotted in our garden were robins, pigeons and crows… but the winner was the beautiful pheasant!
