Excellent purpose-built facilities
Hengist Field is a purpose-built centre caring for those who need nursing or specialist dementia care, short term rehabilitation or respite stays.
Our modern and bright Home has spacious rooms and facilities all built around a courtyard design, with views that overlook the quiet Kent countryside. It’s important for our ladies and gentlemen to feel comfortable in their new surroundings. All of our bedrooms have en-suite facilities and bedrooms can be personalised to add those special touches; photographs, ornaments, pieces of furniture – anything that helps create a familiar, home-from-home environment.
Hengist Field is divided into three specialist units, with associated lounges, dining rooms, cinema and activity areas. The well-maintained gardens surround the whole building and are well placed for enjoying some al fresco dining, gardening and outside entertainment. Relatives are encouraged to bring picnic baskets or barbecues and enjoy some family time together.
Personal care and well-being
The person-centred care we provide not only meets the medical and care needs of our residents, but also supports overall well-being and independence. We have a dedicated team of qualified complementary therapists who spend time with residents on an individual basis to make a real difference to their lives with treatments including massage, reflexology and Reiki. You’ll recognise the team when you visit the Home by their sunny yellow t-shirts.
We also have our own hair salon and physiotherapy room and are visited by a range of external health professionals including chiropodists, speech therapists and opticians.
It’s important for us to build relationships with you as a family to help us get to know your loved-one better, but also to support you and be on hand to answer questions and offer reassurance.
Recreation and leisure
We encourage our residents to carry on enjoying their hobbies and pastimes when they come to Hengist, whether staying with us for a short time or permanently. Our Recreation and Well-Being team find out all about our residents’ interests to help them arrange activities and outings throughout the week. We’re spoilt for choice when planning day trips in our minibus with the beautiful Kent countryside and coastal towns right on our doorstep. Castles, country parks and gardens, pub lunches and cake and coffee at the nearby Oad Street craft centre are regular favourites, and family and friends are always welcome to join us.
No two days are the same with a programme of activities that allow residents to either come together and socialise, or relax with their own interests. We enjoy quizzes, arts and crafts, movies in our cinema room and exercise sessions; gardening for those with green fingers, book clubs and sing-alongs. We also welcome the local church bell ringers, pet therapy animals, singers and theatre groups.
We have strong links with the local village community, including Borden church, and have wonderful volunteers who support our activities and special events and offer companionship to the ladies and gentlemen we care for.
Special occasions and seasonal events are always celebrated with decorations, entertainment and events for family and friends to join in with.
Some time ago we started a ‘Make A Wish’ list for our residents to tell us all the weird and wonderful things they’ve always wanted to do. Apart from making funny and heartfelt conversation topics, we’re delighted to have made many wishes come true.

A special thank you
Nellsar Care Homes would like to thank everyone for their endless support. We are so grateful to our staff and relatives, and we want to thank our residents for keeping us smiling.
Nutrition and dining
Mealtimes are a key part of daily life and a good opportunity to socialise. With the support of Nellsar’s Head of Catering, Adrian Silaghi, we provide a 5-star dining experience and with a choice of lounges, dining areas and new kitchenettes our residents can choose how and where to dine.

We know that good nutrition supports good health, so our Nutrition and Wellness Manager, Leni Wood, works alongside our Chefs to deliver the very best meal plans using wholesome foods and drinks. We take a holistic approach to help build resilience and boost immunity through mood lifting ‘Boost in Burst’ foods and involve our residents in making decisions and promoting independence when eating and drinking. This person-centred approach helps us meet individual likes and dislikes as well as addressing any specific concerns or needs.
A focus on technology
We embrace leading technology and resources to keep us at the forefront of delivering the very best person-centred care. One of these initiatives is called ‘Nourish’; a digital system with hand-held devices which our Nurses and Carers use for creating accurate care plans and notes which are live and updated in real time. Please feel free to ask us more about Nourish and how it works in the Home.
We also offer a bespoke service called ‘interactiveMe’ which is an online memory box packed full of photos, music and videos all about your loved one. It creates an amazing talking point, sparks conversation and allows Carers to really get to know our residents well.
In the coming weeks we’ll also be installing ‘Magic Tables’. These are projectors that create bright, moving images and games on a table for residents to touch and interact with. This fantastic piece of technology not only stimulates physical and cognitive activity but provides a relaxing and social experience.
In our specialist dementia unit, we’re installing 3D wall murals and shop fronts (post office, newsagents and florist) and well as personalised bedroom doors and memory boxes full of personal treasured objects.
Redevelopments on the ground floor include a new bar area where residents can socialise and enjoy an aperitif before mealtimes, and a mini mart selling cards, newspapers, toiletries and other items for residents and visitors to buy.
Dedicated Staff Team
Home Manager Neli joined the Nellsar family in 2018 and has an established career in nursing and care home management. She is supported by her Deputy, Ana, and a team of dedicated staff, all of whom are passionate in providing high standards of person-centred care and support.
Our ‘Resident of the Day’ initiative helps each member of the team understand our residents’ likes, dislikes and the things that really make a difference to them. All staff – whether Carers, Nurses, Housekeepers or Maintenance – find out what’s important to each individual and give them the opportunity to select their favourite meal for our Chef to prepare, choose an activity they’d like to do, and add any special touches to their room. Family members are invited to be part of these reviews and we always give feedback when their loved one has been Resident of the Day.
If you would like to find out more about the care and services we offer, please feel free to visit us anytime.
If you have any questions or would like to book a time to meet with Neli or the team, please call us on 01795 473880 or email admin.hengistfield@nellsar.com

A message from the Manager
Hello, my name is Neli Koleva and I’m the Manager of Hengist Field Care Home in Sittingbourne. I joined the Nellsar family as Manager here at the Home in November 2018, bringing with me 34 years’ Nursing experience from working in a variety of UK and overseas care settings. Our wonderful team here provide high-quality care while ensuring that our residents enjoy all aspects of life within our Home.
Hengist Field Care Home was opened in 2011 and the design fits in beautifully with the surrounding Kent countryside of Oast Houses and orchards. We have first-class facilities here for our residents to enjoy and are developing many new and exciting ideas and initiatives to enhance daily life within the Home.

Hear from a few of our staff at Hengist Field Care Home

Marion Judd
Induction and Training Facilitator, Hengist Field Care Home
Marion was one of the founding members of staff to join Hengist Field Care Home in 2011, beginning her career as a Nurse, then becoming a Senior Carer, then enjoying a promotion to Induction and Training Facilitator. With the help of her colleague, May, Marion has grown in confidence and gets a real sense of satisfaction to see people develop their career at the Home and progress within the company. Marion feels completely supported by the entire care and management team, in particular when she experienced a personal tragedy and needed time off work before she was able to return. Being able to ‘give back’ to her colleagues after all the kindness and support she has received is one of Marion’s greatest achievements; She feels like an established member of the team and looks forward to continuing in her role for years to come.
