Remembrance at Hengist Field Care Home

Here at Hengist Field Care Home we have been making poppies with air drying clay, card and the bottoms of lemonade bottles, to make a beautiful display to remember the fallen. We painted red for the fallen and some purple or lilac for the animals of war.

Everyone enjoyed making the poppies and displays, as it is so important to remember those who went to war and never came home.

A single poppy has the soul
Of a thousand Heroes
And the Tears of a Million
Loved ones, Lest We Forget

When you go home, tell them
of us, and say,
For your tomorrow we
Gave our today.

On the 11th hour
On the 11th day
Of the 11th month
We will remember them

At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will REMEMBER THEM.

On Friday 11 November we joined in with the two minute silence at 11am, to remember the fallen and the sacrifices that were made, wearing our poppies with pride.

We then had a lot of fun decorating our shortbread cookies that we’d made the day before, using red icing and a currant for the centre of the poppy. It was messy but great fun and enjoyed by all.

Everyone shared their stories of the war and what they could remember, some were very funny and some sad. In the afternoon we held some quizzes on Armistice Day and poppies, before our lovely Chaplin Pat visited and did a wonderful service for us, with readings and hymns.

Afterwards we enjoyed a lovely cuppa with some very tasty cupcakes.

A busy day, full of reminiscence and togetherness.
